3 Fun Trends for 2022

Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen something amazing on a remodeling/design show and felt so inspired that you immediately went to Pinterest and fell down a deep rabbit hole looking at beautiful pictures? Now keep your hand up if you ever actually found a way to incorporate that trend or idea into your home. Not too many hands up, right? We all love to watch design shows but it’s so overwhelming and/or intimidating to try to find a way to make that idea work with your existing design.

Even as designers, we feel this! But we also love trends and finding ways to incorporate the freshest, newest ideas into our designs. Here are three trends we are loving right now, along with a few ideas for how you can actually bring them into your own space.

Trend: Accent Hutch

We have never met a client who didn’t wish for more storage somewhere in their home. Whether in the closet or the kitchen, more space is always a good thing. And it’s an even better thing when that space comes in a beautiful package. Enter the accent hutch. A hutch can be an easy way to add a pop of color to your kitchen, and the customization options are nearly endless. Choose glass doors to show off pretty dishes or your vintage glassware collection or opt for solid doors to create a hidden coffee bar or the perfect spot to store appliances out of sight.

If you’re looking for more storage and have the space in your kitchen footprint, this is an easy trend to jump on. We often add just one large utility/pantry or linen cabinet onto an existing cabinet design. If you’re using it as a pop of color, a hutch doesn’t have to match your existing cabinetry, so you can add it to the mix without changing everything else. Hutches can also float in the room, which gives you options when you’re trying to figure out where it will live.

Trend: Countertop Backsplash

Left: This gorgeous project by Helen Bergin Interior in West Palm Beach, Fla., shows off the stunning countertop pattern as backsplash. Right: We worked with Homeworx Remodeling on this project, which features a countertop and backsplash in Calacatta Gold from Silestone.

If you’ve ever gone through a kitchen remodel, you know there are many decisions to be made! Our next trendy idea helps take at least one of those decisions out of mix by using your countertop material as a backsplash. We love this trend because the finished look is clean and pulled together, plus it’s just easy. All you have to do is find the countertop you love and voila, your backsplash is also done.

This trend is fairly easy to incorporate if you’re already planning to replace your countertops. Just have your contractor or designer measure the wall section between the countertops and the underside of your wall cabinets as your backsplash. Then when you order countertops, the backsplash will just be part of the order. Depending on the material you choose for your countertops, this trend can get a little pricey, but it sure looks gorgeous.

Trend: Open Concept Walk-In Butler’s Pantry

Hidden cabinet pantries had their moment in the sun but lately, we’re seeing a big move toward open-concept walk-in pantries. Think butler’s pantry, but its own room. This space is a perfect spot for a second refrigerator, a prep sink, or another dishwasher. The additional room has major wow effect and really makes your kitchen feel like a Michelin star restaurant.

This trend is definitely more involved! If you don’t already have a walk-in pantry space, you would need to knock down walls to create this space. But if you do already have a walk-in pantry with a door, you could riff on the trend by taking the door off and replacing your existing wire shelving with beautiful cabinets and trim built shelving. This mini makeover will have a major impact in your kitchen space.

We love watching the trends and finding fun ways to incorporate them in our design work. But we also totally get that figuring out how a trendy, fun idea could work in your existing space can feel a little bit overwhelming.
